A search function is always useful because it enables you to find specific files, without navigating through a maze of folders. A better way to locate your files, which is more effective than any search function, is to associate them with tags. They work as keywords, which you can use the same way as you would do during a standard search process, but they will help you find what you are looking for instantly. X-Tagger was created specifically for this purpose. It lets you tag any files, with any keywords. In this way, if you need to find those files, you just need to use their designated tag and you will find them immediately.

The application can be installed rapidly, after downloading its 10 Mb setup kit. It works on Windows Vista and Windows 7 and it requires .NET Framework 4.0 to work properly. You will have to go through a straightforward setup process and the application will be ready in no time.

There are only two actions to perform, on the application's interface, which should be obvious. First, you will have to tag your files, then you can use those tags to find your data. You may create any tag by typing a keyword and clicking a button. Once created, your tags are listed on the left side of the window. The larger area of the interface serves multiple purposes. You can explore the folders on your hard drive or switch to a results list, by clicking different navigation tabs.

A third tab will display a details column, between the tags list and the results list. Tagging one or more files is simple. While navigating through your folders, you will have to select one or more files, after which you need to drag and drop a created tag from the list to the details column. When you need to find the files, you can drag and drop their tag in the area above the results list. Your tagged files will appear in the list instantly and you will be able to work with them just like in Windows Explorer. Right clicking a file or a selection will display the same context menu and you can even click and drag the files to copy or move them.

Pros

The application brings a fresh approach to tagging and finding files. Tags are created instantly and you can use them just by clicking and dragging them from one place to another. When a tag is used, its associated files will be listed instantly.

Cons

Although a wizard will help you get started, you still have to rely on your skills to figure out how to tag your files. Fortunately, it will not take long. You only need to try X-Tagger and you will never want to use a standard search function again. The application will help you find any files instantly, without any effort.
